The headline simply read: Lake County considers ‘trash-cams’ at school cafeterias. Apparently, in the unending efforts to get kids to eat better, the school board in Lake County, FL, had decided to force children to take a vegetable at every lunch. While they were making it a must to take the vegetable, the kids decided it was not a must to eat the vegetable, costing the taxpayers over $75,000 per year. Obviously they couldn’t keep wasting that much money, so the school board considered installing cameras on their trash cans.
There are so many different thoughts that come to mind when reading a story such as this; however, a profound truth surfaces very clearly. We’ve often heard that you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. In the same sense, we can force kids to take the veggies; however, there is no way we can force the kids to eat the veggies. While there’s no denying the benefit from a proper food selection, whether or not they will eat it is a personal choice.
In Deuteronomy 30: 15 Moses explains to the children of Israel, “See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, and death and adversity.” (NASB) To love the Lord, walk in His ways, and keep His commandments will bring blessings. To do otherwise will only bring hurt and destruction. Today, we have that same choice as the blessings for a good choice and the horrific consequences for a bad choice are both clearly detailed in the Bible.
Having the option to obey the will of God or not, which will you choose today? Like the kids we have the choice. We know the veggies are good for us; however, that doesn’t mean we will eat them. In like manner, we know God’s will is best, but will we choose His way?
May God bless you this week as you walk with HIM!
