Why is it that at the end of the day, the pile that “needs to get done” either stays the same or increases? Those who are in the business world are coached on the skill of time management. They understand that in businesses, there are task that would be “good” for them to do, and then there are task that are “crucial” for them to do, and the difference between the two could be worth thousands of dollars. Thus, it is very important to understand priorities and not be distracted by every little thing that comes along.
In Luke chapter 10, two sisters, Mary and Martha, play hostess to the Messiah. As Jesus came and took his seat in their house, the Bible records that Mary sat at His feet while her sister Martha was “distracted with all her preparations”. (v. 40) Her response was very simple as she told Jesus to, “…tell her to help me.” (v. 40) Seeing a teachable moment, Jesus replied, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” (v.41-42)
Literally defined as “having the attention diverted”, the term “distracted” can carry with it such profound implications. In our lives, there are the tasks that seem important, and then there are the tasks that are important. Ultimately, the defining line between the two rest in what will matter in eternity. Mary listened to Jesus; Martha worked trying to serve a nice meal. Both were doing the important; however, Jesus said what Mary was doing was “the good part”. May that be said of us as we live here in this world.
May God bless you this week as you walk with HIM!
